I didn’t quite intend to do this but once I got started it was a bit hard to stop :)
I’ve got the best versions I believe are available in most cases with a few exceptions. For Rebecca, Spellbound, Notorious, and The Paradine Case, I would have preferred to get either Criterion or the MGM Premiere Collection set but I had too many problems getting them for a decent price. I’ll get those eventually I think.
I hear some of the DVDs in the set on the right haven’t got the right aspect ratio, so I may replace some of those (hopefully with Blu-rays which I intend to do as they emerge anyway - HMV have a sh*tload of the later movies marked as pre-release on Blu). I have a lot of those recorded off Sky HD anyway, really a lot of these DVDs I really only got for the extras.
Additionally, two of the movies in the “British Years” box set have totally silent soundtracks. My hope is at the least that the BFI eventually release a new DVD or Blu-ray of The Lodger, with Joby Talbot’s score, but there is a scored version in the MGM Premiere Collection I think. Anyone know of a scored version of Downhill?
Speaking of Blu-rays, there are three Hitchcock movies that I know of available on Blu-ray: Psycho and North by Northwest, which I have, and The 39 Steps, which I hear really isn’t worth the upgrade at present.
Now to carry on watching them all :) I’m up to Juno & the Paycock so far. The plan is to make it to Psycho and The Birds for Halloween. Read my reviews as I write them at Ambival.net!
