Part of the grotesqueness of the problem is that there are three basic ways in which you can relate to life: through power, through love, or through withdrawing. Trying to get out of the grayness through love is very, very difficult, because love is very, very hard to find and to give. Withdrawing is increasingly difficult in the modern world because of the tempo, the amount of communication, the social mobility. The basic adjustment that most people make to life is power. Power has become of grotesque proportion.
