Counting Down to 30: 1985-6

So, I didn’t get around to doing ‘85 yesterday as planned lol… I’ll just do my best to stay on track.

I may have missed something out at the end of the last one: I thought I started school in ‘85 but my mum tells me it was probably ‘84. This was my school for the 80s:

(“sports day”: probably out of the current year range, but the best pic I have of the actual building. I think I’m wearing a hat for an event, not just to be odd…)

In 1985 my mum remarried and I don’t recall being too happy about it which I guess is the classic response for a 5-year-old.

(actually this wasn’t from that wedding, possibly from much earlier, my aunt’s - but it’s a better picture…)

1985 would be the last time my beloved blue teddy Peter was seen (hmm, that makes me think: I’m amazed I haven’t recreated him in Second Life yet lol… next project, methinks!)

Movies I remember loving either at or shortly after the time include: Santa Claus, The Goonies, D.A.R.Y.L., Teen Wolf, Labyrinth, Karate Kid Part II, Clockwise, Short Circuit, Howard the Duck, The Boy Who Could Fly and Flight of the Navigator. Wow, I could seriously sit down and watch all of those right now :) The Oscars went to Amadeus and Out of Africa; I would give them to Back to the Future [1985] and Aliens [1986]. Orson Welles died in ‘85. His last movie was Transformers: The Movie which I think should be a comfort to us all in times of not doing our best, lol.

Music I might’ve noticed at the time at this point only includes the debut of Belinda Carlisle though I really wasn’t crazy about her until Heaven on Earth. Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, Culture Club and Bananarama etc were definitely floating around. I might have already been making music of my own with one of these:

In 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded… I don’t really remember hearing about it at the time (can we say “sheltered childhood” lol?) but like I’ve said I don’t remember much from this time… Pixar animation studios opened this year too, and apparently the first PC virus spread. We weren’t affected cos we had one of these:

My first brush with computing, haha. Custard Pie Factory, Trivial Pursuit, and BASIC… hours of fun with 5 CLS / 10 INPUT NAME$ “WHAT IS YOUR NAME?” 20 PRINT “HELLO” NAME$ (lol that’d probably result in SYNTAX ERROR, I have forgotten how it goes but it always resulted in a totally deluded impression that the computer was either magic or sentient).

Neighbours and Eastenders both started broadcasting and I’d watch both for far too long, especially Neighbours, which I guess is where my crushes on the Minogue sisters started (pretty much over that now). Hmm, crushes… I had almost forgot about those. I’ve had lots of those in my life, hehe. I might be getting ahead of myself again but I think this was pretty much the shape of my crushes at this point: already a definite mix of “do I love them or just want to be like them?”

She-Ra

Rainbow Brite

Supergirl.

OK I think that’s quite enough for today lol.
