What Did I Say?

I don’t post a lot here anymore, I know, but one thing I did think it would be good for is those times I have something that’s Too Long For Twitter, and this is one of those times. If you follow me on Twitter these past few days you may have noticed some vague dramatics that mightn’t have made a lot of sense. Let me just say, before anyone suggests it, that I’m not posting this in anyway to try and “fix” things because I’m pretty certain this was something that was wanted all along and for all I can see, this is what happened: I was thrown out of a group because for whatever reason I wouldn’t wear the group tag; I was asked why, and I said why. This is a group I was glad to be in, for a performer I not only like to listen to but love as a person with all my heart. But the moment I got defriended, kicked out of the group, and generally made into the bad guy, I’m sorry but all of that counts for nothing. I’m just posting this because I am genuinely curious if anyone else can tell me… what did I actually say that was bad enough to warrant this response? (edit: sorry, I should’ve added, my avatar name is Melody Paperdoll)

The set-up: a typical Harmonia show. I actually arrived at the venue wearing my group tag. Sorry about some of the gibberish characters in this, a lot of gestures but I didn’t want to cut anything out. Hopefully it’s readable.

Alright. So at this point, I took my tag off. Three separate people had said it, and I knew it was only going to get worse, and I don’t like it. 5 minutes later, Harmonia IM’ed me and asked me why I wasn’t wearing it. I think it must have been around here that Harmonia tried to “deal with” what I’d said in IM over the stream. She explained that everyone was welcome at her shows with or without the tags. Guess what happened next? Watch the increase of the occurence of the word “TAGS!” and caps!

This is the point at which I got angry. I was being deliberately called out andthat’s what I call being made to feel unwelcome. Harmonia puts I think 10/20L in the venue’s tip jar for every person wearing a group tag, I’ve rarely seen the contribution go over 200L, less than a dollar, nothing that would actually help a flagging venue keep its costs down… it is seriously not that big a deal. I wear my tag for the same reason I go to Harmonia’s shows… for her, not for anyone else. Is that wrong? OK, we continue… now I admit I get slightly cocky here. But what I’m asking you is, was itthat bad?

So here the irony is I was actually already on my way out and done because you can’t win against that person once she decides there’s a fight on. As I TP’d out, I heard Harmonia break off the song she was singing and, for want of a better word, flip. I TP’d to my home where I have Harmonia’s stream in so I heard the rest. There was little said after the show and 2 days later I was out of the group and off Harmonia’s contact list.

There isn’t much more to say, I just wanted to present this because I seriously don’t think I said anything worse than people, including me, have got away with before. As an extreme example there’s a guy still shows up at the shows who has frequently heckled Harmonia, once telling her she was out of tune and then getting a request fulfilled just a few minutes later. I don’t even think the b*st*rd line was that bad, I thought it was pretty much provoked and some people actually laughed at it.

I wasn’t even doing this just for me. I was thinking about anybody else who turns up at Harmonia’s shows for the first time, like I did once, and might for whatever of their own reasons also not want to get into the whole family tags thing, to just want to be left alone to enjoy the music, and being constantly pressured with TAGS TAGS TAGS is just not nice. I don’t think I was causing a fuss about nothing. I don’t think I was the one who was being over the top. Anyway, there it is.
